What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Mountainwest Service Experts in Salt Lake City always writes about how our team of experts are NATE-certified, and while it sounds comforting, what does it actually mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as mentioned on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed nearly 20 years ago and is supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be certified by NATE. The certification is voluntary and technicians can work in the heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration industry without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Mountainwest Service Experts that our experts are NATE-certified to ensure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure professionals meet these standards, the NATE-certification exams validate real-world working knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these subjects.

Since Mountainwest Service Experts focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification instead of refrigeration, there are only particular areas applicable to our technicians. NATE test candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the talent areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
